Simple tips to ensure your board of directors is the best it can be.

  1. You are fully aware of your responsibilities and have clarity of your role.

  1. The organisation has a compelling vision that aligns and inspires employees about the future.

  1. The organisation’s 3 values are verbs that show the way, leaders are role models and these values inform decisions.

  1. There is an unambiguous strategy, with key objectives that prioritise resource allocation.

  1. The Board focus on the longer-term and the external environment to build a resilient and  sustainable organisation.

  1. Board papers are timely, concise, precise and consistent so that meetings are used for thinking not reporting.

  1. Concerns and risks are surfaced early and openly discussed.

  1. The Board has a balance of skills and experiences, its members participate in constructive challenge, debate and evaluate options.

  1. There is effective follow up of all agreed Board actions, they should not be buried in the minutes.

  1. There is periodic review of the Board performance and that of individual directors, key learnings are implemented.
