Commercial & IP Associate

Area of Expertise

  • Intellectual Property
  • Commercial Law

Marthinus brings a rare blend of deep intellectual property expertise, commercial awareness, and calm, solutions‑focused thinking to the team. As a 4PQE lawyer specialising in IP and commercial contract matters, he advises clients on a broad range of contentious and non‑contentious issues, helping them navigate complex legal landscapes with clarity and confidence.

Before moving to the UK in 2022, Marthinus qualified as an attorney in South Africa after completing his training at a specialist intellectual property firm. He has since developed a strong working knowledge of IP law and practice across the UK, EU, and South Africa, supported by a Master’s degree in intellectual property law. His experience spans trade marks, copyright, designs, and confidential information, as well as the commercial agreements that underpin technology and innovation.

Alongside his IP practice, Marthinus regularly drafts and negotiates commercial and technology contracts and has advised on IP and commercial issues in high‑value corporate transactions and reorganisations. Clients value his thoughtful approach, his ability to distil complex issues into practical advice, and his steady, collaborative manner. He fits naturally into our culture of warmth, trust, and personal service.

Colleagues appreciate his willingness to get stuck in, his measured judgement, and his genuine commitment to helping others succeed. Whether he’s unpicking a knotty legal question or supporting a client through a fast‑moving project, Marthinus brings diligence, insight, and a quiet confidence to everything he does.

Outside of work, Marthinus enjoys playing cricket for his local team and spending time with his family.
